ARLINGTON, Tex. — A short week ago, Brewers fans were in panic mode. Starting 3-6, the Crew was struggling in all facets of the game. Starting pitching, relief pitching, offense, and defense. Nothing was working.
Now, this team is looking like a well-oiled machine. After a 4-1 win today, the Brewers have won four straight. During that time, Brewers pitchers have allowed a total of three runs, not giving up more than a single run in a game.
It’s an incredible transformation, but today’s performance by Pete Vuckovich was the exclamation point in the phrase We’re back! Randy Lerch allowed only a run in seven innings to the Blue Jays. Mike Caldwell pitched a shutout. Moose Haas allowed a run in eight innings. Rollie Fingers is back to his dominant self.
But what this team needed most was the return of Vuke. He is the ace, yet he’s been anything but ace-like to start the season. Until now.
Pete Vuckovich was fantastic. For the first time this season, he was in complete control of a game. He went the distance, allowing only a run on three hits and three walks, striking out seven.
It turns out that this winning streak has come at a good time. Although the Brewers were only a game and a half back of first when they lost their last game, they find themselves two and a half games back now. How? The Detroit Tigers have won eight games in a row. While the Brewers had two consecutive days off, the Tigers were still winning games. So it was important that they turned things around to keep pace.
So this team is back. Let’s go for the sweep tomorrow, fellas.
